Littleton Public Schools – Gudy Gaskill Elementary School
Denver, CO (June 16, 2023) – Howell Construction recently completed the ground-up construction of the new Littleton Public Schools Gudy Gaskill Elementary.
Construction began in March 2021 on the 90,000 SF school, which was built from a state-of-the-art design by HCM Architects and was constructed on the existing Franklin Elementary campus schoolyard, replacing the existing aging building. Once demolished, the Franklin Elementary footprint was transformed into playgrounds, playing fields, and parking serving the new school and neighborhood. The school was completed on schedule and opened for students for the 2022-2023 school year.
Early collaboration efforts through use of Building Information Modeling identified numerous conflicts with the structure, underground MEP, framing, and rough-in. These clashes were adjusted and re-sequenced early in the construction process to provide a smooth flow of work free of design or schedule impacts.
“This was a stand-out project in terms of the collaboration and teaming among all stakeholders,” said Nate Holst, Howell General Superintendent. “We continue to apply best practices from this project to all Howell construction work.”
This project was characterized by high levels of collaboration among all stakeholders, including end user groups. Application of LEAN construction techniques including daily huddles, visual planning, and weekly look ahead schedule meetings ensured all 52 trades on site understood the plan and could work free of job site coordination conflicts. When completed, the Howell team took great pride in turning the new school over to the District in time for classes to start in August and in seeing the students enjoy their new building, playgrounds, and playing fields.
