Howell Recognized for Commitment to Safety Excellence
Howell Construction was recently accepted into the AGC/OSHA Construction Health and Safety Excellence (CHASE) Program, which recognizes contractors who have made a commitment to establish and continually promote a culture of safety excellence in the workplace.
“A construction company’s safety culture is a leading indicator of the quality of the company,” said Dan Vickers, Howell vice president and safety manager. “It is very difficult in our industry for a poorly-run company to have an excellent safety program.”
The CHASE Program is the result of a partnership between the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) in an effort to improve workplace safety and decrease accidents, illnesses, injuries, and fatalities on job sites. Participation in the CHASE Program offers certain benefits to contractors in return for their commitment to safety, such as advance notice of OSHA inspections.
To qualify for the Program, contractors must meet a series of requirements, including:
- Implement a comprehensive written safety and health program.
- Conduct documented safety inspections of all work.
- Train employees for hazard recognition specific to contractors work sites.
- Conduct weekly employee safety meetings.
- Employee participation in self-audits, site inspections, job hazard analyses, safety and health program reviews, safety training, and mishap investigations.
When asked why safety is so important to Howell, Vickers said, “It’s simple – we have a moral obligation to protect the workers on our jobsites and ensure they go home to their families free of injuries. We are constantly striving to improve our safety practices and performance, so we are excited to be participating in the CHASE Program”.
