CU Anschutz – Central Utility Plant
The CU Anschutz Central Utility Plant (CUP) project is an infrastructure upgrade to the source of steam and chilled water that feeds the CU Anschutz Medical Campus. The upgrade was needed to support the current campus and new development that came online in 2021. The CUP generates steam and chilled water as a heating and cooling source for the entire campus. To increase the heating, cooling, and process loads, Howell installed a new boiler, chiller, and cooling towers to expand the CUP’s capacity for the campus. To support the new equipment the electrical, security, and structural systems were upgraded while keeping the facility fully operational. Creativity was required for critical crane picks and electrical shutdowns to maintain facility functionality.
