City & County of Denver – Red Rocks Loading Dock
The Red Rocks Amphitheatre Loading Dock project was a high-profile build at one of the world’s most iconic music venues. Under a compressed five-month schedule, beginning immediately after the conclusion of the 2024 concert season, Howell, in partnership with our trade partners, successfully delivered the project on time, ensuring the venue was ready to open for the 2025 season.
During demolition, the project team encountered a flatiron rock formation extending into the footer excavation zone. Through immediate coordination between Howell and the City and County of Denver, the schedule was re-sequenced to allow for its removal without impacting the overall project duration.
The site presented unique challenges, including steep, rocky terrain requiring deep excavation for large footers and foundation walls. Use of an on-site tower crane required meticulous coordination with park officials to safely mobilize and demobilize equipment while managing necessary street and trail closures in this famous setting.
Even during the off-season, Red Rocks Amphitheatre remains a year-round destination with ongoing events and heavy pedestrian activity. To ensure public safety and minimize disruptions, Howell developed a detailed logistics plan in advance of mobilization. This plan, with feedback from the Red Rocks facilities team, prioritized the visitor experience in
conjunction with construction needs.
The highlight of the Howell team’s efforts was delivering the project on schedule – a feat that other contractors considered unattainable. This achievement underscores Howell’s ability to drive results, remain adaptable, and commitment to an exceptional client experience. The team demonstrated the ability to execute under extreme schedule pressure in a world-renowned, high-traffic location – all without disrupting ongoing operations.
