Safety Manager Attributes

Attributes preferred, not mandatory, of a top candidate include:

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree, or certification from trade/technical school
  • Bilingual
  • OSHA certifications beyond OSHA 30-hour
  • CHST or OSHA 500 Instructor
  • ASP or CSP
  • 5-10 years related safety experience and or training
  • Based out of the Denver office, significant field travel required
  • Must be able to professionally communicate with internal (Howell) and external (client, subcontractor) stakeholders
  • Ability to interpret and present technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatical form
  • Creative problem solving and critical thinking
  • Ability to define problems, collect and collate data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Complete knowledge of Microsoft Outlook/Excel/Word/PowerPoint, Bluebeam Revu, and Procore
  • Valid Colorado Driver’s License
  • Pass a background and MVR check
  • Ability to work at elevations, climb ladders, use scaffolding, wear fall protection and work in inclement weather when necessary
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals and legal documents
  • Respond to common inquiries or complaints from regulatory agencies or members of the business
    community
  • Present information to our customers, project teams, senior management and groups of
    subcontractors or employees of the organization

Position Responsibilities

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Understand, apply and update Howell’s Health & Safety Program.
  • Assist and lead teams in formulating site specific environmental & safety procedures, in compliance
    with current local, state, and federal entities such as OSHA, EPA and CDPHE.
  • Conduct random safety observations to ensure projects comply with all applicable safety standards.
  • Audit all portions of the jobsite to detect existing or potential accident conditions, health hazards,
    environmental risks, including stormwater runoff potentials.
  • Make recommendations for corrective or preventative measures, where hazards are identified.
  • Participate at all levels in developing and conducting safety training (both small and large groups).
  • Work with the Howell Safety Committee to create/develop and implement training programs, and
    other enhancements to the Howell Construction Health & Safety Program.
  • Track renewal requirements for mandatory training topics, on an individual employee basis.
  • Coach project teams through incident/accident investigations.
  • Assist in compiling required information to support the incident investigation.
  • Lead in root cause analysis of accidents and injuries and cooperate in the preparation of material and
    evidence for organizational use in training/lessons learned.
  • Analyze and prepare operational risk reports for management briefing, including support to enhance
    the efficient collection and sorting of safety-related data in Power BI and Procore.
  • Monitor individual occurrences and trends, in order to provide support accountability to project
    supervisors, and to foster adherence to Howell’s reporting requirements, which includes a demand for high-quality data entry.
  • Communicate effectively with the Operations Leadership Team and Safety Committee on all pertinent items as they relate to Howell policies/procedures and federal, state, local regulations associated with inspections, incidents, accidents, and injuries.
  • Support and collaborate with Howell HR/Controller to properly manage injury after-math, return-to-work procedures, and other items necessary to bring Workers’ Compensation claims to closure.
  • Participate in federal, state, local government, and third-party inspections/walk-throughs.
  • Assist in project pre-planning and startup, relating to project safety.
  • Perform onsite first aid requirements and recommend medical treatment when/if required.
  • Build relationships and participate with governmental agencies, national and local associations at a
    membership/committee level.
  • Perform additional assignments as requested by the General Manager and the Operations Leadership Team.
  • Be a team player with a solutions-oriented mindset.
  • Mentor and coach personnel regarding hazard recognition.
  • Identify and support project management individuals who are struggling or in need of assistance,
    training, or discipline.
  • Travel to multiple project locations, including but not limited to the Denver Metro areas, Ft Collins,
    Colorado Springs, and the Eastern Plains. Most of our projects are along the I-25 corridor, south of
    Boulder and north of Castle Rock.
  • Updating/publishing of OSHA Logs, yearly CHASE submission, other Safety tasks as required by
    Operations Team
  • Assist in increasing Subcontractor Engagement on projects including JSA review(s), etc.
